The Russos revealed how Spider-Man became a very important part of the film’s story. So much so that it wasn’t possible for them to proceed without him. Explaining why Spider-Man mattered so much for Captain America: Civil War, Antony Russo revealed, “We believed we did not have a movie without Spider-Man. We believe that he balanced the movie in a way, on a storytelling level, that was essential and the movie couldn’t function without it.
” Back in 2016, it was tough for Marvel to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, given that the character’s rights belonged to Sony. Fortunately, fans got to see Peter Parker alongside Iron Man and many other superheroes thanks to the collaboration between Sony and Marvel Studios. Civil War started Tom Holland’s MCU journey as Spider-Man.
The film also featured Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, among others. Speaking more of Spider-Man, the wall-crawler will next be seen in his fourth overall standalone MCU movie, Brand New Day. Helmed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the anticipated project is set to hit theaters on July 31, 2026.
