When Russia Joined The Allies & What Role It Played In WW2 Close Following Operation Barbarossa, the Soviet Union decided to join the Allied cause. In 1941, the Soviets began receiving aid from the Western Allies, and the country officially began fighting Nazi Forces. Notably, in 1943, Joseph Stalin met with Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt at the Tehran Conference, where the world leaders discussed new strategies to take down the Axis powers.
For the first half of the war, the Soviet Union worked on getting German forces out of their country. Operation Barbarossa lasted for two years, in which the Germans held tight to the Soviets' southern territory. The Soviet Union lost millions of soldiers, yet eventually successfully took back their land. From there, the rest of the war was dedicated to the Soviet Union taking back the territories that Germany had invaded at the start of the war.
