NORAD again scrambled aircraft after Russian planes flew near Canada and Alaska.

Russian military aircraft flying in the Alaskan and Canadian Air Defense Identification Zones prompted the North American Aerospace Defense Command to scramble fighter jets in the latest such incident over the last 12 months.

that it scrambled U.S. Air Force F-35 and F-22 fighter aircraft in response. KC-135 tankers, one E-3 AWACS aircraft, as well as two Canadian CF-18 fighter aircraft and one CC-150 tanker were also deployed. This was the second time this year that NORAD had responded in this way to Russian aircraft buzzing North American airspace, following a similar incident on February 19.Approaching the ADIZ "requires the ready identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security," according to NORAD which has dealt with several incidents in the last 12 months involving Russian aircraft.Wednesday’s incident involved two Russian Tupolev Tu-142 maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft.. NORAD said they flew along with two Sukhoi Su-35 single-seat air superiority fighters. Also spotted that day was an Antonov A-50 airborne early warning and control aircraft. On September 24, 2025 NORAD responded to two Tupolev Tu-95s and two Su-35s that were detected in the Alaska ADIZ. In the same region, NORAD deployed aircraft to detect and track a Russian Ilyushin Il-20, whose NATO reporting name is Coot, and which is a Soviet-rea surveillance- NORAD also responded to an Il-20 on August 20 and 21. In another incident on July 22, NORAD responded to Russian military aircraft operating in the Alaskan ADIZ without specifying which planes Moscow had sent. NORAD also did not reveal which Russian military aircraft it had detected operating in the same region on April 14. Created in 1957, NORAD is a shared operational command organization between Canada and the U.S. to protect each country's airspace by using a layered defense network of satellites, ground-based and airborne radars and fighter aircraft. NORAD has said that it was always"ready to employ a number of response options in defense of North America."
