Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh is the first member of the Royal Family to go to Ukraine
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, left, greets Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh prior to their talks in Kyiv visit of Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, to Ukraine, and described her as “the epitome of what the Firm wants and needs to be: a dutiful, dedicated, hard-working and likeable public servant”. That was before Charles III’s coronation and long before illness struck the Royal Family.
This week’s visit to Kyiv was at the behest of the Foreign Office, and intended to “demonstrate solidarity with the women, men and children impacted by the war”.
President Zelensky knows better than anyone that what Ukraine needs is weaponry, Patriot air defence missiles and ammunition for its hard-pressed artillery. But he knows too, especially as a, that there is a parallel battle being played out for the hearts and minds of the global community.
The visit of the Duchess of Edinburgh will have done Ukraine’s cause good. It is another reminder that, unusually in international politics, this is a relatively uncomplicated matter of right and wrong: Ukraine, a sovereign nation of less than 35 million people, was invaded by its larger, expansionist, autocratic neighbour and is being systematically brutalised.
