In the early stages of ' Boogie Nights', Paul Thomas Anderson had his sights set on Leonardo DiCaprio for the lead role. However, the subject matter - a pornographic film - was considered taboo at the time, and many actors and their representatives were hesitant to take on the part.
Mark Wahlberg eventually landed the role, but Anderson initially believed DiCaprio would be a good fit. Casting director Risa Bramon Garcia, who had worked with DiCaprio on 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape', was tasked with approaching the actor. By then, DiCaprio had already been offered the role of Jack Dawson in 'Titanic'. Garcia recalled their conversation: 'I sat down with him and said, 'Leo, let me tell you something.
That movie, Titanic, is about a boat that sinks. No one's gonna give a s*** about who's on the boat.
' I tried to persuade him by emphasizing Anderson's potential as a major filmmaker, but DiCaprio was already committed to 'Titanic'. The film went on to become a massive success, earning numerous awards and solidifying DiCaprio's stardom. Years later, DiCaprio finally got the chance to work with Anderson on 'One Battle After Another', which received critical acclaim and awards recognition. Despite his initial hesitation, DiCaprio has since expressed regret for not working with Anderson on 'Boogie Nights'
