Chris Kelly originally thought he would be a stay-at-home father for a few months, but has appreciated the one-to-one time with his sonafter the pandemic, and social lives resumed, but one lingering hangover from the lockdown years is having a positive effect on family life: the number of stay-at-home dads is at a record high.

According to The Fatherhood Institute, the way that fathers felt about parenting shifted over the course of the pandemic. “[Lockdown] was this sudden and huge natural experiment where fathers were at home en masse,” explains spokesperson Jeremy Davies.. They were in this intense experience of being eyeball to eyeball. A lot of fathers talked about their relationship with their children changing, and improving. They talked about telling their children they loved them as a new thing.

“It started to create a virtuous circle: the more you realise that you can do it, and that it’s satisfying, you get better at it and you do it more,” she says. “The more men who take on that role the more respect is had for parenting. And the generation who are recipients of that are growing up recognising that parenting is something that all genders can do.”from London, has two daughters, aged four and one month.

It’s almost exclusively women, and I expected that to change more than it has. You do end up party to conversations that, as a man, women wouldn’t normally share with you. When I go back to the baby groups in a few months’ time I’m expecting the same. I found stopping work absolute fine – it wasn’t really a part of my identity – but I do find myself wondering about the future a lot because they won’t need me so much in a few years. What am I going to do when my job isn’t looking after young children?
