is now over halfway through its second season, and it remains a dreary slog through a badly mangled Middle-earth. Still, this week’s episode was a lot less cringey than last week’s. At least there were no irritating Harfoots or Stoors and we didn’t have to suffer through any more scenes with Amazon’s version of Tom Bombadil.
That’s about it for the elves outside of Eregion. In the elven city, trouble is brewing. Celebrimbor goes from glowing achievement to emotional wreck in the space of this episode. Things start off great, with the elves and dwarves working together at last. The one big Easter Egg here is the gate we all remember fromhave been crafted and are on full display as the elves and dwarves celebrate their newfound friendship and collaboration.
Because the timeline is compressed and out of order, Durin’s ring-madness feels rushed. The ring’s influence should not be so obvious so quickly, and should really only begin to go very dark after the One Ring is forged and Sauron’s power over the rings takes hold. I would love to have seen the ring only perform magical miracles at first, and have all the dwarves effectively enchanted by it and not just the king.
The dwarven plotline, like the Eregion plotline, have potential. The problem is the myriad bizarre decisions the writers make to weaken the story along the way. Speaking of which . . . .Finally we come to Númenor, a city that is supposed to be huge and grand, the very pinnacle of human civilization in this world with men whose lives are extended by hundreds of years and who possess superhuman traits—but who, inI really despise this storyline, and it should be one of the best.
