Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for the premiere of Season 2 of The Rings of Power and also for the books by J.R.R. Tolkien on which the series is based.

In J.R.R. Tolkien's writings, the Elves go through a similar ordeal, and the forging of the Three Rings is directly tied to the Light of the Eldar fading in Middle-earth. As immortal beings, Elves deal with the passing of time differently, seeing the world die and fade as they remain, so the rings were forged to preserve and enhance the beauty and longevity of the things they love in Middle-earth, as well as preserve their physical light and their cultural and spiritual influence.

When Celebrimbor agrees to work with Annatar , first they forge a batch of lesser rings to hone and perfect their craft. Then, the Seven Dwarven Rings and the Nine Rings for Men are forged. Finally, after Annatar has already departed Eregion, Celebrimbor forges the Three. This means that the three Elven Rings weren't imbued with Sauron's malice, making them the most powerful among the Rings of Power — and the most coveted by the Dark Lord.

In the books, however, Nenya is given by Celebrimbor directly to Galadriel . Its properties give the ring the power of preservation, protection, and possibly concealment from evil, as her realm of Lothlórien becomes one of difficult access to the dark forces of Sauron. As it represents the element of water, Nenya also increases Galadriel's longing for the sea and her return to Valinor, although she is more than capable to resist such a pull.

Narya, the Ring of Fire The names and properties of each of the Elven Rings are direct references to the natural element they represent. Narya, the Ring of Fire, carries a ruby and, per Tolkien lore, it's unknown which metal was used in its forging. In the show, though, Celebrimbor mentions the need for silver, which results in Finrod's dagger being used, so it could be that. Also, in the series, Celebrimbor uses mithril, but, in the books, the ring is clear of the Dwarven mineral.

Vilya, the Ring of Air Close The third of the Three Elven Rings is Vilya, the Ring of Air, despite its blue color. It carries a gem of sapphire and is made of gold, although in The Rings of Power it's also implied there is a little mithril alloy in its composition. It is regarded as the most powerful of the three rings, although its powers are not specified. The ring does have specific effects associated with healing and preserving.
