As GOP convention opens, Milwaukee residents are caught between hope and dismay.

Supporters of former president Donald Trump took part in a small boat parade on Saturday in Milwaukee. The Republican National Convention is set to start Monday in Milwaukee. MILWAUKEE — When chef Adam Siegel learned that Milwaukee had clinched the Republican National Convention, he exulted. His 300-seat restaurant, Lupi & Iris, was less than a mile from the action.

For Milwaukee, this week is a kind of do-over: The city spent months preparing to host the 2020 Democratic convention before it was postponed and then conducted mostly remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic. Others said the event had fallen short. Gary Witt is chief executive of Pabst Theater Group, which operates six entertainment venues in Milwaukee with the capacity for anywhere from 200 to 2,500 guests. He agreed not to book shows this week to leave space for convention-related groups.But those events never materialized. Five of the six venues will sit empty this week .

Trump supporters had called for a boat parade on the waterfront Saturday afternoon . At 2 p.m., about seven vessels festooned with Trump-themed flags went back and forth on the lake’s dark blue, choppy waters.
