Colby Martin: Social media make others' lives look perfect, but the reality is that everyone has problems that only seem insurmountable
Do you sometimes feel as though other people’s lives are more amazing than your own? Or do you ever catch yourself assuming that most people are happy — or at least happier than you are? “Wow, it sure seems like so-and-so is doing really well,” we tell ourselves, or, “I kind of wish my life was more like .”
In stark contrast, when we consider our own lives, we have a much larger data set to pull from. While we might acknowledge that we occasionally have a great night out with friends once a month, or perhaps last year we went on that singular fabulous vacation, we tend to weight those as the outliers. But that’s because it’s our life.
According to some in the field of psychology, ignoring the bad runs the risk of giving more power to whatever it is that we are trying to turn away from. Psychologist Albert Ellis,, the founder of rational emotive behavior therapy, put it like this: “In the long run lead to failure and disillusionment, and not only boomerang back against people, but often prejudice them against effective therapy.”
And this brings me to what I really want to say today. Part of what it means to chase after wholeness and happiness in our life is to deal with and engage the fears, the pain, the failures and the sadness. Trying to merely overpower them with positive thinking and repetitive mantras might have short term success, but research is now showing it does not lead to long term transformation and growth.
