Breaking: The Rams overcame a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to advance to a championship face-off with the Cincinnati Bengals on Feb. 13
INGLEWOOD, Calif.—With a single trade last March, the Los Angeles Rams pinned the fate of their franchise to a loser. That might not be a fair description of Matthew Stafford, but it was long an accurate one for a player who languished for 12 dismal seasons in Detroit.
The Rams’ defense held on from there, sealing the victory with an interception by Travin Howard that sparked a raucous celebration on the field—and disappointment from a boisterous pro-49ers crowd in Los Angeles. Now they have beaten the 49ers, completing Stafford’s journey to the sport’s biggest stage—and showing that his record with the Lions wasn’t necessarily indicative of his abilities.
On Sunday, Stafford finished 31 of 45 for 337 yards and two touchdowns. He guided the Rams to 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, capped off with Gay’s game-winning field goal, adding another chapter to an NFL postseason that has been filled with heart-stopping, last-second endings.
