Locals in Cronulla are fighting for a long-promised “missing link” to extend a popular beachside walk. The government might deliver only part of it.
NSW Opposition Leader Mark Speakman has backed residents in his Cronulla electorate opposing government plans to cancel an extension to a local walking track.
The full loop would run from Salmon Haul Reserve, through Hungry Point Reserve, to Darook Park at Gunnamatta Bay. “We’ve been told they won’t be continuing the path right around. All the path would be doing is continuing for a bit longer, stopping, and then you’d have to turn around and walk back. We want a continuous loop.“It’s there for the community and so many people walk The Esplanade daily. It keeps people healthy, and it will boost tourism.”
Sutherland Shire Historical Society president Pauline Curby and Cronulla resident Bruce Howell have fought to retain public access to Hungry Point Reserve on the southern tip of the Cronulla peninsula.Kamper said Crown Lands was reviewing future management of the reserve with Marine Rescue NSW, the council and the Hungry Point Reserve Land Manager board.
