Kelly Macdonald The Radleys Interview header

Kelly Macdonald is a mother whose unhappy marriage has a darker secret behind it in The Radleys. The Scottish actor quickly made a name for herself with her first role in Danny Boyle's Trainspotting and has since found acclaim for her work on both the big and small screen, including the satirical mystery Gosford Park, her Emmy-winning role in The Girl in the Café and both Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated turns in Boardwalk Empire.

In anticipation of the movie's release, Screen Rant interviewed Kelly Macdonald to discuss The Radleys, walking the tonal tightrope of a loving mother and a woman fighting her urges, developing the specific dynamics with Lewis and his two characters, how she related to her character, and her thoughts on the chances of a Brave 2 or live-action remake of the Pixar movie.

Kelly Macdonald: Oh, I don't know. I just am a mom. I don't think I necessarily would have to be a mom to play the part of Helen. My kids are younger than the kids I am mother to in the film. And yeah, it's a whole different kettle of fish really. Kelly Macdonald: I think it is all about love with Helen. She's doing it all for love. She became a vampire for love, and she's trying not to be a vampire for the love of her children.

Kelly Macdonald: Yeah, well it is about addiction, and I think Helen in particular uses different methods of distraction, really, for herself. I think she's a member of all these clubs, and they're trying to fit in their community, and white-picket fences, and she's just throwing everything at it, trying so hard.

Helen is in a loving, but kind of estranged, relationship with Peter in the film. They're not completely honest with the outside world or each other, so she's sort of a bit distant to him. And then the brother arrives on the scene, and she absolutely can't stand him, and can't be in the same room as him, and has very extreme feelings about him. So, that was just really fun to play the two different aspects of that.
