Bushland close to homes in and around Sydney is at risk after the wet of La Niña left forests full of fuel and hazard reduction behind schedule.

Firefighters are racing to reduce fuel close to Sydney’s urban fringe as authorities warn bushland unscathed by the Black Summer blazes could ignite and threaten homes this bushfire season.

“This is probably the first real opportunity that people are starting to see and smell smoke, but it is absolutely crucial work to reduce the fuel loads in the forests that butt up to people’s homes,” RFS Inspector Ben Shepherd said. “There are high fuel loads in a number of areas in and around Sydney,” Shepherd said. “We haven’t seen a risk like this really since the 2019-20 season.”The RFS is targeting areas that have not burnt in more than a decade for hazard reduction.

The burns do not stop a bushfire from taking hold but are designed to slow its advance and sap the amount of heat generated, buying firefighters time. The street, looking onto Berowra Valley National Park, is an example of Sydney’s urban-bushland interface where authorities are concerned about bushfire risk.

“From our second storey, we could see the flames along the ridge going down towards Berowra,” she said. “Every so often the flames would burst up, because there was a house that was burning.”
