The Punch Bowl Inn saga - and the community devastated by its loss - is proof how much our historic pubs mean to us
Historic pubs have great significance for communities and when they become damaged or destroyed, deliberately or accidentally, this can spark strong emotions among residents and action from councils, courts and planning inspectors.
In Lancashire this spring, five people were sentenced in a court after the Punch Bowl Inn was demolished without permission back in summer 2021. Its owners gave-up waiting for a decision from Ribble Valley Council regarding the building's future, it was said. However Ribble Valley Council took action against the unlawful pub demolition and the companies involved were Donelan Trading Ltd, which owned the demolished Punch Bown, and Percliff Ltd, a contractor.
Her letter adds: "Discussions are ongoing regarding the suitability of the remaining on-site material. Following the conclusion of those discussions, the local planning authority will then be in a position to issue its final decision." The court heard it was difficult to find similar court cases to the Punch Bowl Inn which the district judge could compare. One case was mentioned at Skipton and another in Cambridge.
A number of planning applications had been submitted regarding the site over the years. Earlier this year before the court case's completion and planning appeal dismissal, Donelan Trading Ltd submitted a plan for six holiday lets and a manager's accommodation at the site. Different applications were previously submitted by Donelan Trading and Andrew Donelan in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
