Royal relationships are often treated as gossip and tittle tattle fodder for entertainment pages, but not followed by serious people.
So too does the disgrace – long overdue – of the King’s brother Andrew. The immediate constitutional implications of Charles’s illness concern the prospect of his at least temporary incapacity. Until recently, this role could by law be held only by Queen Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew or Princess Beatrice. There were worries about both Harry and Andrew’s presence on that list, or even that of Andrew’s daughter Beatrice, who is not a working royal and thus has built no particular reputation for public service.But such worries all felt rather abstract.
