Check out the exclusive pitch deck that Trala, a startup offering virtual violin lessons, used to raise $8 million from investors like Alexis Ohanian's Seven Seven Six
Similar virtual music lesson apps exist for different instruments, like Yousican, but Trala also offers live video instruction with teachers, rather than just pre-recorded classes. Trala also uses advanced signal processing technology that provides students with instant feedback on their rhythm and pitch while they're practicing, which Walder and Indukuri spent a year developing.
Unlike traditional music lessons, which primarily cater to young children once a week after school and can cost hundreds of dollars a session, Trala's lesson plans can be customized depending on a student's price point and schedule. Lessons range from $40 for a half-hour and $70 for one hour sessions. Users can opt for a subscriber plan, which are typically packaged at two or four lessons a month.
Trala formally launched in 2017, and has since grown to host 30 different violin teachers with hundreds of adult students from around the world, ranging from beginners to repeat musicians. "We have this amazing student of ours who is a truck driver who started playing violin out of the bed of his truck," said Walder,"and now he plays in a symphony orchestra."
The team hopes to use the new capital to grow their student and teacher base, and they have longer term plans to expand into additional instruments.
