The Corinthians played to 60,000 people as the unofficial England team in the 1960 World Cup
Unsung Mancunian footballing heroes finally got the recognition they deserve this week after a plaque was unveiled for Manchester Corinthians.
That did not stop the Corinthians, however, who played to crowds of more than 60,000 on their trips abroad. They would play as the unofficial England side, and won a major European tournament in Germany in the late 1950s, and were supported on their travels by legendary Manchester City men’s goalkeeper Bert Trautmann.
The 85-year-old was at the plaque unveiling, telling attendees that her and her teammates ‘just wanted to play football’, but the men overseeing football in England ‘thought we should be at the kitchen sink and washing the pots or feeding the masses’.
