The Pint-Sized McMurty Spéirling Breaks VW ID.R Record At Goodwood Hillclimb | Carscoops carscoops
has set a new outright hillclimb record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, beating the Volkswagen ID.R’s previous record of 39.9 seconds.Automotive said it was aiming to set a new course record with ex-Formula 1 driver Max Chilton behind the wheel. It proved to be quick from the very outset, recording a time of 41.29 seconds during practice and on Saturday, recording a time of 40.056 seconds.
However, McMurty and Chilton obviously left something in their back pocket as in the final Timed Shootout on Sunday, the Spéirling set a new outright record, completing the hillclimb in a staggering 39.08 seconds, smashing the by almost a full second and knocking off over two seconds from the previous best time recorded during the Timed Shootout set by Nick Heidfeld in a McLaren MP4/13 some 23 years ago.A video of the record run shows just how unbelievably quick the Spéirling is. It sprints off the line so quickly that it beggars belief and is able to take corners at remarkable speeds. Making it all the more incredible to watch is just how small the car is.
Powering the EV is a 60 kWh battery pack and electric motors delivering a combined 1,000 hp. Like any good race car, the Spéirling has a huge focus on downforce, so much so that it generates more downforce than a Formula 1 at 150 mph car thanks largely to the use of two fans that send air through the car. Indeed, these fans alone can generate 2,000 kg of downforce when the car is standing still.
The extensive use of carbon fiber also means the Spéirling is incredibly light, tipping the scales at under 1,000 kg .
