In the 1961 Jabalpur riots in the city of Jabalpur, in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, the press gave a 'communal tone' to a crime involving two Muslim boys, resulting in widespread violence. The 1964 Calcutta riots were a retaliation for Muslim attacks on Hindus during the East Pakistan riots during the same year. There was also the Hindu-Sikh riots of 1966 where a wave of violence erupted following proposals for a Punjabi-speaking state surfaced.
