Bill Skarsgård in Hemlock Grove.
For seven seasons, Sarah Michelle Gellar won over fans in the hit vampire series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But, ever since the show's very last episode in 2003, fans have looked for a worthy enough replacement.
Luckily, the 2013 Netflix original series Hemlock Grove, created by Brian McGreevy, certainly fit the bill. With scary supernatural creatures, action-packed moments, as well as internal turmoil at its core, the three-season series is a must-watch for Buffy fans. Plus, with IT and Nosferatu star Bill Skarsgård in the lead, it's almost like seeing a star in the making. What Is 'Hemlock Grove' About? Hemlock Grove starts off with Peter Rumancek moving into town with his mother, Linda . But, unlike other towns, Hemlock Grove is filled with secrets, supernatural beings, and sudden, unexplained murders. Peter, a gypsy werewolf in hiding, then befriends Roman Godfrey , a wealthy high school teenager who unknowingly is an Upir . Roman's also the son of one of the wealthiest families in town, with his parents being Olivia , a full Upir as well, and Norman Godfrey . Shortly after Peter and Roman meet, they partner up in solving the town's latest killing of a young girl. But as they investigate, and learn more about themselves and their families, Roman begins to unleash his desire for human blood. At first, Roman comes off as a privileged, rich kid until we see the emotional relationship he has with his sister Shelley, and his loyal friendship with Peter. Throughout the series, he wrestles with that duality of human and vampire, and how to control his cravings from acting out into a beast. 'Hemlock Grove' Is a Must-Watch for 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Fans While Hemlock Grove and Buffy the Vampire Slayer are certainly two distinct shows, they have similar themes, while having different tones and styles. While Buffy focuses on the ups and downs of high school in a small town, in addition to Buffy's journey slaying vampires and demons, Hemlock Grove gives the supernatural a moodier, bloodier and more adult spin. One thing both shows excel in, for instance, is using their character's supernatural gifts as a metaphor for human experience. In both shows, main characters Buffy, Roman and Peter have their own moral dilemmas, confronting the darkness within themselves, as well as the literal monsters they fight each day. Plus, both shows have characters who are finding themselves and their place in the world. In Hemlock Grove, Peter and Roman spend the series understanding who they are, their lineage and the dangers of what they can become. The dark truth they find is enough to isolate them, destroy them mentally and distance themselves from each other. On a lighter tone, Buffy finds herself from a teenager all the way to an adult on the show. Throughout the seasons, she goes through the natural challenges of young adulthood, like heartbreak, identity crises, and grief, while finding her talents and challenges in fighting monsters. With that said, Hemlock Grove, which came to an end in 2015 after three seasons and is now available on FilmRise, is a must-watch for horror fans and Buffy fans alike. With a darker, more introspective tone, the series follows two friends as they find out who they are and the dark secrets their town, and their families, have been hiding from them. It's action-packed, emotionally compelling, and sometimes so gory you won't be able to look away.
