Brilliant service and spacious rooms in this sky-high Tokyo hotel
Tokyo is famous for its skyline, and there are few places better to admire the horizon than from the upper floors of the Peninsula Hotel, in Tokyo’s prestigious Marunouchi district. From here, you also have up-close views of the Imperial Palace and its gardens, a green oasis punctuating the tightly-packed urban sprawl of this vibrant city.Arriving after an 11-hour flight from London Heathrow, the sumptuous room we were shown to felt like a real haven.
After a quick power nap, it was time to check out the hotel’s other facilities. These include a well-equipped gym and a gorgeous 20-metre pool, with sunbeds, water features and more great views of the city. There’s also a spa with a variety of treatments on offer, including massages, facials and body exfoliations.Food-wise, there’s The Lobby for casual dining, including a delicious breakfast.
Up on the 24th floor, we visited Peter, a swish, modern Japanese grill restaurant where you can watch darkness fall and the twinkling lights of Tokyo spark into life. Top recommendations here include Japanese specialties such as the Wagyu beef, Hokkaido aged potatoes and grilled asparagus with yuzu pepper.
If you don’t want a full-on meal in the hotel, then grab a cocktail at the bar on the same floor, and kick back at a windowside table The Peninsula Hotel also gave us the opportunity to acclimatise to Japanese manners. Quite simply, you will find no other country where the hotel staff are so polite, accommodating and respectful, and this definitely applies to The Peninsula, where they went above and beyond to keep visitors happy.
