Although Robert Pattinson's Batman doesn't appear in The Penguin, the series continues to build the gritty Gotham City established by 2022's The Batman, and subtly sets up Matt Reeves' The Batman - Part II with a deeper look into Gotham's criminal underworld and a shake-up in the hierarchy of the city's organized crime. Speaking to ScreenRant at the 2025 Golden Globes, The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc expresses her satisfaction with the show's overwhelmingly positive reception. LeFranc defends The Penguin's limited series nature and confirms that a direct follow-up will only be made with 'the right idea or the right characters'. LeFranc also says she would 'be honored' to helm a new project in Matt Reeves' The Batman universe, but explains she would only tackle the project if she found 'something unique and different' with the characters. There's more stories to tell there, for sure, if we can find the right idea or the right characters. I'm not sure about that yet, but I'm really proud of the work that we've done.
