If you faced a one in 50 or even one in 100 chance of losing your ability to move through life independently when you took your next flight, would you take that chance? That’s what motorized wheelchair-dependent travelers face.

Many don’t travel because of those odds. About 1% to 2% of all wheelchairs and scooters are mishandled—damaged or delayed—by airlines, according to Transportation Department statistics. That can be catastrophic to users who lose their mobility.
