The article critically examines the concept of a Palestinian state, highlighting the inherent challenges and potentially detrimental consequences. It argues that while the desire for Palestinian self-determination is understandable, the pursuit of a traditional nation-state model may be unrealistic and ultimately harmful to both Palestinians and Israelis.
The recent catastrophe in the Middle East since October 7, 2023, has brought renewed attention to the issue of a Palestinian state. There's a prevailing narrative that Saudi Arabia, and by extension, the West, links peace with Israel to the establishment of a Palestinian state, suggesting any other outcome would be a historical blunder.
While I wholeheartedly support the notion that Israel should not exert coercive control over millions of Palestinians and wish for my Palestinian friends to find happiness and fulfillment, if statehood is the path towards that, then I am in agreement. However, the notion of an inalienable Palestinian right to nation-state status is, at best, shaky and potentially detrimental to all parties involved.\The pursuit of a Palestinian state faces numerous obstacles. The Holy Land is a geographically constrained region, with a heartland spanning approximately 100 miles of Mediterranean coastline. This area, situated between the Galilee hills and the Negev desert, averages 50 miles in width until it reaches the Jordan River. Cramming two states into such a limited space would prove challenging. Even a withdrawal by Israel from the West Bank, the eastern portion of this area, would leave it a mere 12 miles wide at its narrowest point. This presents a significant security concern, particularly in a region rife with jihadism. The previous attempt to partition the Gaza Strip has been a colossal failure. Israel transferred control to the more moderate Palestinian Authority in 2005, but Hamas, a militant group hostile to Israel, seized power two years later. Since the 2022 massacre of 1,200 Israelis orchestrated by Hamas, the prospect of Israel relinquishing control over the West Bank seems increasingly improbable. \ Complicating matters further is the lack of preparedness by the Palestinians for statehood. The Palestinian Authority, plagued by corruption, ineffectiveness, and a lack of democratic principles, fails to inspire confidence. In Gaza, Hamas governs with an oppressive mix of theocratic and kleptocratic tendencies, indoctrinating youth with extremist ideology while suppressing the spirit of the adult population. Considering this history, any future Israeli government would inevitably demand a demilitarized Palestinian state with stringent restrictions on even the weapons permissible for a police force. This demand is likely to be met with Palestinian rejection, fueled by their belief that demographics are on their side and they will eventually force the Jews to leave. The Palestinians also insist on controlling half of Jerusalem, including the Old City, a demand that would inevitably lead to the division of a city between two nations, with large minorities on both sides seeking to incite chaos through terrorism. This prospect is highly unlikely to be acceptable to Israel.
