Carl Frode Tiller’s “Encircling” trilogy offers a striking counterpoint to Karl Ove Knausgaard’s “My Struggle,” examining an individual entirely through the eyes of others.

” trilogy, the last volume of which was published in an English translation by Barbara J. Haveland in July. To begin with, Tiller’s novels are not about himself: they center on a fictional thirty-six-year-old named David Forberg, who lives in Trondheim, a city in central Norway, and who appears to be suffering from severe amnesia.

We drive slowly into the town center—if you can call it a center, that is: a mini-roundabout and a scattering of houses. I lean forward in my seat, scanning the street, not a soul to be seen, the place is totally dead, deserted, scarcely a shop even, nothing but a closed café and a grocer’s with darkened windows. We’re playing here? Fuck’s sake, doesn’t look as if anybody even lives here, can’t think who’d want to live here, who’d do that to themselves.

Though the geography of the books is mostly limited to Otterøya, Namsos, and Trondheim, the cast is large and varied: it includes, among others, a former vicar, a farmer, a violent former criminal, an elderly retired nurse, and a feminist activist involved in environmental causes.
