The Academy's new inclusion standards don't do quite enough to increase opportunities and accountability

It’s safe to imagine that the likelihood of not meeting these standards increases as we descend further into Oscar history. In order to find even a semi-recent best-picture winner in any danger of doing so, though, you’d have to look as far back as 1995’s macho extravaganza—which had a roughly 13% female cast and a roughly 25% female crew, according to IMDb.

Surprisingly, this unwelcome truth is perhaps most evident in standard B, which a film can meet by hiring only six nonwhite crew members. That seems like an embarrassingly low requirement, particularly for a large-scale production. Best-picture nominee in, which was nominated the same year, boasted nearly 10 times that number on its visual-effects team alone.
