'People may be very surprised to know that disposable, single-use cups are not the invention of our modern consumerist society, but in fact, can be traced back thousands of years.'
Crafted 3,500 years ago by the Minoans, a handleless, clay cup designed to drink wine in a single-use will go on display Thursday at the British Museum in London.
But it's not the only one of its kind: Thousands of the cups have been found on Crete, the Greek island where the Minoan civilization was centered, indicating to researchers that these cups had a similar use as many disposable cups used today. "People may be very surprised to know that disposable, single-use cups are not the invention of our modern consumerist society, but in fact, can be traced back thousands of years," Julia Farley, who is the co-curator of the exhibit"Disposable? rubbish and us," part of the larger"The Asahi Shimbun Displays" series, said in a statement.
The Minoans were among the first advanced civilization in Europe. According to the museum, the cups were mass-produced on Crete around 1700-1600 BC.
