Producer George Martin knew that"Twist and Shout" required a vocal"shred" that Lennon might not be able to deliver twice. "We knew it had to be the last song of the day," Martin later recalled."Because we knew John wouldn't have a voice left afterward." In a move that’s become rock lore, Lennon gargled milk to soothe his throat, stripped off his shirt to stay cool, and stepped up to the mic. The band knew the stakes: record it once, give it everything, or lose the track entirely. Why the Flaws Made It a Masterpiece What we hear on the record today isn't a polished studio product—it’s a medical miracle. That ragged, desperate scream that opens the song? That wasn't a stylistic choice; it was Lennon pushing his vocal cords to the point of collapse. The band tore through the song in a single, frantic take. They actually attempted a second take immediately after, but Lennon couldn't produce a sound. His voice was finished.
