What makes Scott's version from Sherlock stand out, even for how recent it is, is the mix of charm and intensity that the actor brings to his portrayal. It's some of the traits that Scott brought forth when he played Fleabag's Hot Priest, albeit it's tuned to a more sinister frequency.
That would have been hard to do and might have even resulted in a different show, perhaps, if Scott's Moriarty was a man of few words. It's interesting to think about because Scott left such an indelible impression as Moriarty that the story suffered for his relative absence in later episodes, having to bring the arch-nemesis back via flashbacks and archival footage.
