The Office's Brian Wittle plot is arguably the sitcom's most hated storyline, but despite what fans might think, this is not because of Jim and Pam.
While The Office’s strange meta plot about Brian Wittle didn’t work out, this was not actually because the storyline seemed to jeopardize Jim and Pam’s relationship. One of the easiest and most reliable ways to upset the audience of a sitcom is to break up its central couple. By extension, one consistent way to guarantee that viewers will hate a new character is to put them between the main couple.
The Office’s Brian Plot Failed Because It Was Too Meta In The Office season 9, episode 12, “Customer Loyalty,” a boom operator named Brian Wittle tells the show’s previously-unseen crew to stop filming as he consoles Pam after a tense fight with Jim. This daring meta twist was met with critical acclaim upon the episode’s initial release but became one of the most disliked storylines in The Office’s history.
The Office Acknowledged Its Crew Too Late However, The Office was not that show. The Office was more concerned with Jim’s pranks on Dwight than exploring the meta nature of the sitcom format, and the series was more invested in character comedy than fourth-wall-breaking jokes that would have been at home in Community. If the characters of The Office had interacted with the crew throughout the series, that would have been one thing.
