The New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming they copied its stories to train the large language models that power ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing Chat / Copilot.
The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement, claiming the two companies built their AI models by “copying and using millions” of the publication’s articles and now “directly compete” with its content as a result. As outlined in the lawsuit, the Times alleges OpenAI and Microsoft’s large language models , which power ChatGPT and Copilot, “can generate output that recites Times content verbatim, closely summarizes it, and mimics its expressive style.
“We respect the rights of content creators and owners and are committed to working with them to ensure they benefit from AI technology and new revenue models,” OpenAI spokesperson Lindsey Held said in an emailed statement to The Verge. “Our ongoing conversations with the New York Times have been productive and moving forward constructively, so we are surprised and disappointed with this development.
