In 2014 Laura Schein was at dinner with her collaborator Keith Harrison at a place called Cafe Gratitude, when Harrison got a notification that the most searched word on Google that day was “emoji.” Around that time emojis had been installed as a default keyboard on the iPhone.Together the duo had already written some short musicals and stand-alone songs over the years. “We knew we wanted to write a full-length musical, but just didn’t know what it should be about,” shares Schein.

The musical centers around a diverse community of emojis living within a smartphone who take one another at face value. Schein plays Smize, the smiling face who is dealing with depression. “Smize has a way of making everyone feel happier and more hopeful,” says Schein. “Smize also has a lot of inner strength and conviction that I love tapping into, especially as the story progresses.”

“Emojiland is about the emojis inside our smartphones and how they co-exist if you were to add the real aspect of human life to them. How they work, how they love, how they fight and resolve, how they self destruct or win, how they forgive and grow,” says Felicia Boswell who plays the police officer. “It literally is like watching the inner workings of your phone through human eyes as they deal with very real-life human situations.
