Chase became the “new House” at the end of season 8, but his fate had been foreshadowed five years earlier in House's season 3 finale. Given that House faked his death in “Everybody Dies,” the Diagnostic Medicine department at Princeton-Plainsboro needed a new boss. The fact that Chase got the job was not a surprise, even more so because House had been teasing that he was going to become Gregory House’s successor for years.
According to House, he only hired Chase because Chase's dad, a famous doctor, called and asked him to. It’s quite ironic that the only character out of the original team to be fired by House is the one who replaced him in the end.
