, political philosopher Franz Fanon breaks down how black bodies displaced in white spaces often have “to experience being through others” or existing within the white gaze. Fanon says, “Today I believe in the possibility of love; that is why I endeavor to trace its imperfections, its perversions,” grappling with how to love those who are different from us — thoroughly and effectively — no matter where they come from.
His past, however, does come up when his black English teacher, Ms. Wilson , asks to speak with Luce’s mother about a Fanon essay he wrote for an assignment in her class. Luce’s paper argues from the perspective of Fanon, who believed that violence is a legitimate form of political resistance against a colonizer.
