Give Crystal Ball a second chance.
The Energon Universe is here, and the new shared continuity is set to reboot G.I. Joe later this year. New beginnings can also mean the chance for redemption, so perhaps now is the perfect time for none other than Stephen King’s infamous contribution to the franchise to get a new lease on life…
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Many fans may not realize it, but the G.I. Joe villain Crystal Ball was created by none other than legendary horror author Stephen King. King’s youngest son Owen was a fan of the franchise, and the celebrated author reached out to Hasbro with an idea for a new character.
King was so enthusiastic that he even wrote Crystal Ball's file card, the famous bios that appeared on the figure card-backs and were mostly written by G.I. Joe godfather Larry Hama.Crystal Ball, Stephen King’s Contribution To G.I. Joe Released in 1987, Crystal Ball never caught on with fans of G.I. Joe; instead, he is widely considered one of the worst characters in the franchise.
Is There Room For Crystal Ball In The Energon Universe? Crystal Ball made a few appearances in the original Marvel Comics G.I. Joe run, and has continued to pop up occasionally throughout the years – most notably in IDW's G.I. Joe: Cobra series, where Crystal Ball finally lived up to his terrifying potential, assuming the role of Cobra’s Inquisitor General, in charge of weeding out spies and double agents within the organization.
Considering G.I. Joe started out as a grounded group of military operatives with specialized skills, it is somewhat understandable that fans bristled when a possibly supernatural character, like Crystal Ball, was introduced to the line. Still, the character could bring an interesting wrinkle to the otherwise grounded stories, and seeing the Joes up against a genuine Stephen King villain is perhaps too much of an enticing opportunity to miss.
