Golf: Cameron Smith is looking to show some form at The Masters. Can he improve on a second-placed finish in 2020?
Cam Smith’s Masters build-up is hard to read but there are many reasons you can’t write him offFor a man of few pretensions, gauging the merits of Cameron Smith ’s claims in the 2024 Masters is a task akin to perfecting the read on the notorious 10th green at the Augusta National Golf Club.
“ bit of food poisoning at the start of last week and probably just tried to do a little bit too much and body just kind of shut down on me,” Smith said in Augusta on Tuesday. The ‘Shark’ Greg Norman believes Smith’s game is trending in the right direction. His coach Grant Field also feels his pupil is “in a pretty good place”. And despite his recent illness, the six-time PGA Tour winner said his game is in good order.
The oddsmakers have that quartet in front of the Australian again, but have added another seven names, an indication there is lessAUGUSTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 09: Cameron Smith of Australia plays his shot on the 17th hole during a practice round prior to the 2024 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on April 09, 2024 in Augusta, Georgia.
He failed to finish in the top 20 in the final three events on that tour and played what was described as his worst round of professional golf at Royal Queensland in November before finishing the 2023 in a tie for 17th at the Australian Open at The Lakes in Sydney. “ probably a few weeks there at the start of the year trying to address some stuff in the swing,” he said.
“He wants to come back. He wants to produce what he knows he can produce winning the British Open. All the ingredients are there for him to start stepping back and getting the confidence level he needs.”Brooks Koepka effectively put paid to suggestions those who defected to the 54-hole format of LIV Golf would struggle to compete in majors with a stunning 2023.
Since the debacle at the Royal Queensland Golf Club, he has played 17 rounds, which is a busier preparation for this year’s tournament, the illness last weekend aside. With players unable to earn ranking points on the LIV Tour, the former world No.2 is now the fifth-highest ranked Australian and faces a considerable challenge to qualify for Paris.
“After the performance in the PGA year, he is determined to win majors. He is not looking at the rankings, just focusing on playing.”The weather forecast suggests the first two days at the Augusta National Golf Club will be a challenge, as American Will Zalatoris noted earlier in the week.
