One Piece's Im mystery may have a simple answer.
Ever since their introduction, One Piece fans have theorized about the meaning behind the villainous Im's name. After all, given how much meaning mangaka Eiichiro Oda has put into some of the other names in the series, it is likely that Im's name also has a deeper importance. One Piece's Im Could Just Be Short For Immortal If Im truly is immortal, then their name could mean something much simpler than fans think. Im could just be short for the English word "Immortal". While it may seem weird that a Japanese series would name a character after an English word, this wouldn't be the first time Oda has done something like this.
Even if the secret behind Im's name is simpler than fans have thought, there are still interesting implications to draw from their name. It is likely that they only took on the name if Im after becoming immortal, meaning that they could be a different named figure from One Piece's history. It would also confirm that One Piece's powerful 5 elders are likely not immortal, as otherwise Im's name wouldn't distinguish them from their underlings.
It will likely be some time before Im's actual identity is revealed given they seem to be set up as One Piece's final antagonist.
