Princess Elizabeth was just 13-years-old when war broke out between Britain and Germany, but the future Queen still played an integral role in the war effort.
Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret dressed as Prince Charming and Cinderella for the first of many royal pantomimes staged at Windsor Castle in order to boost morale. “Went up to the castle for the pantomime – we sat in the front row and the Queen came,” Princess Elizabeth’s confidante Alathea Fitzalan Howard wrote in her diary of the following year’s performance.
The future monarch joined the Guides in 1942, attending meetings with East End refugees who insisted on calling her by her personal nickname of Lilibet . Among the Princess’s mandatory tasks: learning how to make scones and how to put out a campfire. Following her Coronation, Her Majesty would become patron of the Guides.Her Majesty with her family on a tour of the grounds of Sandringham, which had been converted to farm land to support the war effort.
