Robert Dawes was jailed for 22 years after a trial found him guilty of seven charges connected with drug trafficking.
A senior officer has recalled the moment when Nottinghamshire-born international crime boss Robert Dawes was recorded "bragging" about a huge seizure of cocaine. The recording was a key step in landing Dawes with a 22-year-prison sentence, which he is still serving in France.
Described by the National Crime Agency as a global "big fish", he brokered deals with groups including the Italian mafia and Colombian cartels. A new podcast series which looks at the work of the National Crime Agency has now delved into the case, and one officer has recalled a moment that proved to be crucial in convicting Dawes.Surveillance work by the Spanish authorities had revealed that Dawes had an important meeting at a five-star hotel in Madrid.
The international liaison officer working on the case at the time, who is not named in the podcast, says: "I remember the day quite clearly, a phone call of 'we've got something, if you want to pop over and have a little listen' and then that pleasure of ringing up to say 'oh, by the way I've got something you might be interested in'.
