The upcoming Superman: Legacy in the DCU will primarily need to avoid the mistakes found in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, not Man of Steel.
James Gunn's upcoming Superman: Legacy must avoid the mistakes of the DC hero's past, mistakes more commonly found in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice than Man of Steel. The previous iteration of the Man of Tomorrow, played by fan-favorite Henry Cavill, began his journey in the latter. Man of Steel was released in 2013 and was the kickstarter of the then-titled DCEU.
Stemming from that, the characterization of Superman was more consistent with the comic book character in Man of Steel, albeit with some controversial elements from the usually dark-skewed Zack Snyder vision. While elements such as Man of Steel's Jonathan Kent treatment and Superman's murder of Zod caused some division, Superman was mostly the hopeful rendition DC fans have come to love over the years.
What could have and should have been Cavill's Superman dealing with the aftermath of Man of Steel and his confrontation with Ben Affleck's Batman quickly spiraled into a forced early Justice League team-up which, unfortunately, caused Cavill's Superman to have a less-than-satisfying journey.
Why Superman: Legacy Will Avoid Batman V Superman's Mistakes All that being said, there is evidence that James Gunn will avoid these shortcomings with his upcoming adaptation of the character in Superman: Legacy. Upon announcing the DCU's slate on January 31st, 2023, Gunn announced that Superman: Legacy will be the true beginning of his and Peter Safran's DC Universe and will be released in 2025 with a script from Gunn himself.
