Josh Brolin As Thanos in Avengers Infinity War

After Josh Brolin recently commented on potentially returning to the MCU in an upcoming Avengers movie — Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars — it reaffirms that Marvel needs to finally move on from this villain.

Sure, Thanos is one of the greatest villains in the MCU, but following his double defeat in Avengers: Endgame, Marvel can't seem to let his story end. In the first 10 years of the MCU, Thanos was built up as a major antagonist, and things finally came to a head in Avengers: Infinity War, when the Mad Titan succeeded in acquiring all the Infinity Stones. Once done, he snapped his fingers and eliminated half of all life in the universe. This left the heroes defeated, and at their lowest point in MCU history. However, they were able to rally and kill Thanos not once, but twice. First, they killed their timeline's version of Thanos, then Iron Man killed 2014 Thanos with the Avengers' remade Infinity Gauntlet. It was a decisive victory and the end of Marvel Studios' Infinity Saga storyline. But since then, Thanos has appeared six times in the MCU, thanks to the multiverse, which makes his deaths somewhat meaningless. Now, Thanos might return again. What Josh Brolin Said About Returning To The MCU As Thanos Despite Thanos and Brolin not being part of the confirmed Avengers: Doomsday cast, the actor was recently asked by ET whether he'd return to the MCU in one of the upcoming Avengers movies. Like many Marvel actors, Brolin is well-versed in not giving too much away, which is clear from his response: If Joe Russo comes to me, which he may have, I don't know, and has an idea, then I might acquiesce. Probably pretty quickly. While Brolin doesn't confirm he'll be returning to the MCU in one of the two Avengers movies Joe Russo, and his brother and directing partner Anthony Russo, are helming, he certainly doesn't dispel the possibility. He leaves it open-ended, but it sounds much more promising than many actors who are asked similar questions about their involvement in future MCU projects. However, it would be the wrong move for Marvel to bring back Brolin's Thanos in Doomsday or Secret Wars. The MCU needs to move on, and it needs to stop bringing back Thanos. Why Josh Brolin Shouldn't Return As Thanos In The MCU Ever since Endgame, Marvel has struggled to find its footing in the Multiverse Saga. With Phases 4 and 5 officially complete, and a much leaner Phase 6 ongoing, it's safe to say Marvel's Multiverse Saga is the MCU's sophomore slump. Further, it's been clear since the studio announced Robert Downey Jr's casting as Doctor Doom that their way of fixing it is to bring back all their biggest hits. Unfortunately, that won't ensure the longevity of the franchise. Marvel Studios is chasing short-term wins when they should be focusing on the long-term plan. After all, it was the long-term dream of adapting Thanos as an Avengers villain that propelled the MCU to the heights it reached in Infinity War and Endgame. If they bring back Thanos, Marvel would yet again be retreading the same path and hoping for success. Eventually, the well of nostalgia is going to run dry, and if Marvel doesn't continue innovating and delivering exciting, new stories and characters to interest audiences, the franchise is going to suffer. Hopefully, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will give the MCU enough of a reset that Marvel can relaunch the franchise to greater success in the next saga, and leave characters like Thanos in the past.
