The cast and crew didn’t know what the final scenes of the series would be till the very last table read.Amy had pitched from the start that the journey would end with Midge landing on Johnny Carson’s couch. But they felt that it was too early to use Johnny Carson — he was not the kingmaker in 1961 that he became later on.
