Sunday's loss featured the perfect storm of turnovers and special teams gaffes that Cleveland's struggling offense simply can't overcome, highlighting a fundamental problem with the team's construction.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Detroit Lions weren’t perfect on Sunday. They had drops, penalties, and mistakes — yet they walked away with a convincing 34-10 victory over the“Mistakes happen in football. You’ve got to be equipped to overcome them,” Labbe explained on the podcast.
“And I think one of the problem right now is this offense just leaves so little room. ... They just aren’t equipped to overcome these mistakes they’re making.” Sunday’s loss featured a perfect storm of self-destruction: turnovers and a punt return touchdown that directly contributed to 24 of Detroit’s 31 points. The Browns defense actually held Detroit’s explosive offense to just 10 points on drives that didn’t start with a turnover — an impressive feat undermined by the offense’s inability to protect the football. “In two of their losses, the blowout losses to the Ravens and to the Lions, they have thrown the game away with multiple giveaways,” Cabot noted. “And that’s what you can’t do. Nobody’s going to be able to overcome, or it’s very rare that you’re going to be able to overcome three giveaways and a punt return for a touchdown.” The punt return touchdown perfectly illustrated Cleveland’s current predicament. Safety Grant Delpit admitted he thought the ball was going out of bounds and quit on the play. Special teams, supposedly bolstered by the hiring of respected coordinator Bubba Ventrone, has been inconsistent at best. “It’s been awful this year. And of course, going back to when the Browns hired him, everyone was so excited to bring in Bubba Ventrone. Special teams has been a challenge. Yesterday was no exception to that, of course,” Labbe said. What’s particularly frustrating is that when the Browns don’t beat themselves — as in their upset of Green Bay — they’re competitive despite offensive limitations. As Cabot explained: “What the Browns did in the Green Bay game, even though they didn’t have the offense humming along at all and they were shut out for 56 minutes, what they weren’t doing in that game was making the egregious errors and the egregious turnovers.” There are bright spots emerging. Rookie running back Quinshon Judkins has been impressive, gaining 94 yards against Green Bay’s second-ranked defense and following with 82 yards against Detroit. His decisive running style provides reliability in an otherwise unpredictable offense. “He’s very tough. I think he’s going to play and is playing Cleveland Browns football,” Cabot said. “He’s powerful. He gets stronger as the game goes along and they’re onto something with him.” As the team considers a quarterback change from Joe Flacco to rookie Dillon Gabriel, the fundamental question remains whether any quarterback can succeed with an offense that has absolutely zero margin for error. Gabriel’s mobility might help extend plays, but unless the Browns can eliminate the catastrophic mistakes that have defined their 1-3 start, even a quarterback change may not be enough.
