PLUS: ‘Taking your life into your hands’
Hello Manchester city centre’s last remaining Crown Post Office closed yesterday - severing a link that can be traced back to the 17th Century. And politics writer Joseph Timan was there at 6pm as the gates were locked for the final time.
“But for many people, especially those who can't get online easily, losing these institutions can be scary and unsettling. Whether or not you agree with the closure, seeing the faces or staff and their regular customers say goodbye for the last time was really moving. It felt like a real moment in the history of the city centre that had to be marked."
Jess Phillips, the minister for safeguarding and violence against women and girls, said: “Getting on a night bus or near empty train to go home should not feel like taking your life into your hands.” Double red lines, which have been in use in London for years, will be painted along A56 and its side roads from Junction 7 of the M60 to the Manchester boundary. Work is expected to start before the end of the month.
