Almost half of all Australians are making one key mistake with their passwords that Telstra warns is making it especially easy for hackers to access accounts and personal details.

Telstra in a statement revealed they worked with YouGov to research just how many people were using an easy-to-guess password.

A further 17 per cent admitted to using their birthdate either as or in their passwords while another nine per cent said they used their favourite sports team. The Australian Cyber Security Centre recorded an almost 13 per cent increase in cybercrime reports from the previous year, according to the latest data from the 2021-22 financial year.

About 27 per cent of all reported cybercrime in Australia was online fraud, 14 per cent was online shopping and 13 per cent was online banking. “These attacks occur at scale. Criminals can automatically cycle through thousands of compromised logins until an attempt is successful,” Telstra said.
