Stacy Clyburn (Michelle Pfeiffer) sitting in the grass in The Madison

Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Madison season 1.The grief-stricken plot of The Madison took a turn at the end of season 1, but Stacy Clyburn had a few reasons to leave New York City behind in favor of Montana.

The entire cast of The Madison started to feel the loss of Preston in full force in the second half of the season. Paige punched a coworker, Stacy went to therapy, Abby struggled to get over Van , and much more happened. The Madison season 1's finale also had a startling moment where it looked like Stacy had died by suicide, but that quickly gave way to a much less shocking but still surprising reveal: Stacy ended up moving to Montana. That surprise decision needs an explanation. Luckily, Taylor Sheridan laid the groundwork for all of it, and for The Madison to continue in an upcoming season. Why Stacy Returned To Montana At The End Of The Madison Season 1 At the end of The Madison season 1, Stacy decided to return to Montana instead of staying in New York. In a bit of a surprise, Stacy left the memorial service for Preston, got in a cab, and eventually ended up beside Preston and Paul's grave sites along the Madison river. Cade eventually found her sleeping there with the same gun she discovered in Paul's truck, though she assured him it was only for protection. Based on Stacy's question about where to find a whole new outfit, it's clear that she intends on staying in Montana permanently. The only question is why she finally decided to. After all, Stacy's children and friends are in New York, she spent most of the final episode debating whether she could actually leave or not, and she's leaving behind a life of luxury. The simple answer to why Stacy moved to Montana is that she finally gave herself permission to. That's what Phil , Stacy's therapist, was trying to get her to realize: Stacy can do whatever she wants, she just has to allow herself to make the decision and trust in her own judgment. Montana is where Preston's body is, it was his version of heaven, as Stacy noted to Macy, and it's where she wants to be. All the things that were holding Stacy in New York also don't matter anymore. As Phil noted, Stacy's old life feels small and inconsequential after Preston's death. Abby and Paige did a lot of growing up in Montana; Stacy's tough love method worked. They don't need their mother's support anymore in New York. There was nothing holding her back, so Stacy decided she wanted to spend the rest of her life being as close to Preston as she could get. What The Clyburns' Return To New York Reveal About Their Future The finale of The Madison season 1 also revolved around the Clyburn family's return to New York, and their various bad experiences there. Paige's return to work was unceremonious at best. Her boss was unsupportive of her mourning, and one of her coworkers was outright disrespectful and said that Preston deserved to die for flying in a private plane. As a result, Paige punched her and lost her job, but Stacy's intervention kept her out of prison. Abby's experiences in New York were less traumatizing, but they still weren't great. Abby was forced to reunite with her ex-husband, Dallas, and she also reconnected with some of her friends from New York. While nothing as outrageous as Paige's fight with her coworker happened, it was clear that Abby was getting overwhelmed by her old life. Abby's friends also tried to set her up with a new boyfriend, but she clearly was still more interested in Van. Meanwhile, Stacy started seeing a therapist, Phil. During their sessions, Phil took an unorthodox approach. He let Stacy drink, he let her insult him, and he even hugged her when she broke down and revealed her loneliness. Stacy's therapy sessions really seemed to help her, but they also revealed that she has very little interest in staying in New York. With Phil's advice to give herself permission, The Clyburn women's experiences in New York may also be their justification for following in Stacy's footsteps and moving out to Montana. Paige has no career to hold her in the city, and Abby is clearly more excited by the future she could have with Van than with anyone in the city. Stacy, Abby, and Paige changed while burying Preston, and New York may not suit them anymore. Paul's Personal Tragedy Explained The finale of The Madison season 1 also revealed quite a bit about Preston's brother, Paul Clyburn . During a few flashbacks, Paul revealed that he once had a wife who died before him, and that he never recovered from her death. Paul's wife was hit by a car while she was crossing a street, which presumably led him to move to Montana to be on his own following her death. Related Matthew Fox's New TV Series Finally Does The Story Lost Dropped 22 Years Ago 22 years after the premiere of Lost, Matthew Fox finally got to fulfill the original plan for the show in a different series: The Madison. Posts By Sean Morrison Paul also revealed the reason he never remarried is because he was eternally devoted to his wife, even after her death. In his words, the vows"til death do us part" meant until his death, not hers. Clearly, Paul was not in a good mental health space even years after his wife's death. He was still angry about her passing, still missing her, and he still hadn't processed his grief in any healthy way. Paul's grief over his wife also mirrors Stacy's grief over Preston. Stacy is now moving to Montana for a life of quiet solitude, just as Paul did years prior. Both of them are running from their grief instead of trying to heal from it. They're both chained to the memory of their spouses and unwilling to move on. Stacy could do the same thing as Paul if she's not careful: wallow in pity and grief until she dies. How The Madison Season 1's Ending Sets Up Season 2 The ending of The Madison season 1 also did a lot of legwork in setting up The Madison season 2, which has already been renewed. The most obvious area for season 2 to explore is Stacy's ongoing healing journey. She still has a lot of work to do in processing the grief she has from Preston's death. While she took the first step by seeing a therapist, she has to be careful not to replicate Paul's mistake and force herself to live in sorrow. Abby's story has the next clearest way to continue. Abby's relationship with Van is far from resolved, and there are a lot of ways The Madison season 2 could continue it. Now that Stacy is in Montana, Abby has even more reason to return and see Van again. She may even decide to move to Montana and pursue an actual life with Van, now that her mother is living out there. There'll be a fight before that can happen, however, as Abby and Van still aren't on the best terms. Paige also has a clear path forward. After punching her coworker and getting fired, Paige has very little to do in New York. The grief of Preston's death also finally hit her in full force, and she has just as much reason to return to Montana as Abby does. If she does decide to move to Montana as well, that could cause a rift between her and Russell, who has a well-established career in New York. Russell, however, has also said his dream is to raise a family outside of the city, so he may be willing to move. The Real Meaning Of The Madison Season 1 Explained With the first season complete, the central themes and messages of The Madison are becoming clear to see. The Madison is, quite obviously, a story about grief. Everyone is mourning Preston's death, and even Paul was trapped in the grief of losing his wife. Interestingly, The Madison believes that grief is a contradictory thing. It's messy, ugly, confusing, and seldom follows a straight line to recovery. But, The Madison asserts, grief can also be a good thing. It can bring out the worst in people, but it can also be a catalyst for people to change. Preston's death allowed the Clyburn family to grow closer than it has ever been before. Gone are the distant family dinners of the start of the season, the Clyburns are now a family that meaningfully engages with one another. Abby and Paige are better sisters than they've ever been before, and Stacy is a better mother than ever before.Grief can even let people love more than they thought possible. Stacy arguably loves Preston more now than she did when he was alive. Grief forced her to finally see what Preston loved so much about Montana, it allowed her to discover his most intimate thoughts through his journal, and it brought her closer to him than she was in New York. Preston tried to convey all that to Stacy for years, but only grief was actually capable of getting it through to her. For all the good grief is capable of creating, however, The Madison also believes it's a dangerous thing. If you're not careful, grief can consume you instead of transforming you. It can suck you into the past and keep you from moving on unless you make a concerted and painful effort to grow. Stacy and Paul are the prime example of this. In short, The Madison is a meditation on the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of grief. 7.5/10 The Madison 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed Western Drama Release Date March 14, 2026 Network Paramount Network Cast See All
