Michelle Pfeiffer as Stacy Clyburn in The Madison (2026)

Taylor Sheridan's latest TV Western The Madison is curiously named, especially for those unfamiliar with the geography of the Western United States. By contrast, the titles of Sheridan’s other Westerns series Yellowstone, 1883, 1923, Landman and Marshals are more or less self-explanatory.

Yellowstone National Park is among the most famous areas of natural beauty on the planet, while the subsequent four shows reference either the year in which they’re set, or the profession of their protagonist. Yet, The Madison is a Taylor Sheridan Western the name of which could refer to any number of things, from a president to a famous ship. There are dozens of places across the United States which bear this name, too. But there’s one in particular that The Madison’s main characters relocate across the country to reach. It’s a place which holds special significance for Taylor Sheridan, given his previous creations for the small screen. The Madison Is Set In The Madison River Valley Of Montana The Madison which lends its name to the show’s title is the Madison River, a body of water that flows through Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, before joining the Missouri River in Montana. It’s in the valley of this river that the Clyburn family resettles at the start of the series. Notably, the very first episode of The Madison is dedicated to actor Robert Redford, who was an avid fly fisher in his spare time, just as Preston Clyburn is in the TV show. Redford also shared a special connection with Taylor Sheridan, having been the actor originally cast as John Dutton in Sheridan’s flagship TV Western Yellowstone. Like the Clyburns, the Duttons are also based in southwestern Montana, close to the border with Wyoming. Although the specific location of the Dutton ranch is never specified, it could well be in the Madison valley, as scenes featuring fly-fishing in a fast-flowing stream of water imply. Most of Yellowstone was shot further west in the Bitterroot Valley, but this part of Montana is not within the national park which gives its name to the series. It’s more likely that the show is actually set in almost exactly the same location as the setting for The Madison. Where The Madison Was Filmed A direct connection between The Madison and Yellowstone has actually been teased by the new show’s lead actor Kurt Russell. At the same time, its first season wasn’t filmed in the same locations as Taylor Sheridan’s previous Montana-based TV Western. Most of The Madison has been shot on location along the real-life Madison River. Scenes featuring the Clyburn family home have been filmed at the KG Ranch in Gallatin County, Montana, close to the city of Three Forks . This county is primarily known as the place where the Madison joins the Missouri River. Other scenes of the show have actually been shot in adjacent Madison County, including most of the sweeping panoramic shots of the spectacular mountain backdrops surrounding the low plains just north of Yellowstone National Park. Town scenes have also been shot in Ennis, Madison County, such as one featuring the shop Sphinx Mountain Saddlery. Meanwhile, most of the scenes which take place in the city of New York were actually filmed in Dallas and Forth Worth, Texas. Only establishing shots show the real New York, while shoots featuring The Madison’s cast performing the dialogue set in the city all took place in the Dallas-Forth Worth area . The Madison's Title Follows Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone Format Even though The Madison is no longer considered a Yellowstone spinoff, the show follows the basic formula of Taylor Sheridan’s most popular TV Western, albeit with some key differences. Both series are set amid the natural beauty of rural Montana, in the environs of Yellowstone National Park. They both center on a family channeling their grief into the land they’ve settled on, placing the geography of the American West at the heart of their stories. The Madison’s Clyburn family might not be Montana locals like Yellowstone’s The Duttons, but both families spend much of their respective series as a sideshow for the same backdrop. 9.5/10 The Madison 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed Western Drama Release Date March 14, 2026 Network Paramount Network Cast See All
