After releasing in May, Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid remake now officially has a Disney+ release date, but it’s a little later than anticipated.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Little Mermaid's official Disney Plus release date has now been confirmed, and it's a little later than expected. Directed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid serves as a live-action remake of Disney's acclaimed 1989 animated movie. The remake sees Halle Bailey step into the role of Ariel, and the movie was met with generally positive reviews upon its theatrical release back in May.
Now, Disney has announced that The Little Mermaid will hit Disney Plus on Wednesday, September 6. Considering the film was released on May 26, the new live-action remake will be hitting the streaming platform a little beyond the typical 90-day window. The Disney Plus release will come with some special features, including a song breakdown of "Under the Sea," and Javier Bardem's performance of "Impossible Child".
How The Little Mermaid Did In Theaters The Little Mermaid reviews were somewhat mixed overall but generally skewed positive, with some critics lauding it as the best of Disney's live-action remakes. Considering many of the company's live-action remakes have not been met with much enthusiasm critically, this is admittedly not a very high bar. Most audiences seemed to have enjoyed the movie, though, with The Little Mermaid's Rotten Tomatoes audience score sitting at an impressive 94%.
The film earned about $163.8 million in its opening weekend, which means it fell about $20 million short of projections. This underperformance is mostly due to The Little Mermaid's underwhelming reception in certain international markets, most notably China, in which it essentially bombed. That being said, North American audiences responded much more positively to the movie in general, with The Little Mermaid's opening standing as the fifth best Memorial Day debut of all time.
Considering The Little Mermaid's monster budget of $250 million, a $564 million box office run means the movie has likely broken even, but definitely not to the degree to which Disney was hoping. That being said, The Little Mermaid has recently dominated VOD charts, suggesting it has been a popular home-viewing choice. Unfortunately, the latest announcement confirms that Disney Plus subscribers hoping to revisit the film without paying a PVOD fee still have about a month left to wait.
