Years of correspondence between Shirley Hazzard and Elizabeth Harrower reveal much about their unusual friendship.
, comes the beautiful, quiet line, “We are seeing, here again, the bones.” Olubas goes on to mention the final, deep privacy of any life. What literary biographies disclose is something of the social, as well as the private, of the partners, friends, publishers, family, lovers, fellow writers, who together compose the life of a famous writer. In this task there will always be secret, sometimes lost, or even redacted, information.
Harrower is the less well-known of the two: born in 1928 in Newcastle, NSW, she was also an exceptionally fine writer and many of her admirers believe she was never accorded the praise and attention she deserved. Her novels include, which today still reads as radically contemporary in its psychological acuity. Republished in 2012, with a wonderful introduction by Joan London, Harrower’s career was then revived and justly celebrated.
White, for one, considered Kit “vampiric” and Harrower the victim of unhealthy emotional enthralment. The writers exchanged letters, largely centred on Kit, for almost six years before at last, they briefly met.
